Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political party internal democracy plays a crucial role in ensuring that the process of candidate selection is fair, transparent, and inclusive. In Bauchi Local Government, Bauchi State, internal democracy within political parties has been a subject of concern, as it determines the level of participation and the quality of candidates chosen for elections. This study will evaluate the extent to which internal democracy practices within political parties in Bauchi Local Government affect the selection of candidates for local government elections (Aliyu & Tukur, 2023).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Political parties are central to the electoral process in Nigeria, but there have been frequent complaints regarding lack of transparency, fairness, and inclusiveness in candidate selection. In Bauchi Local Government, the internal party mechanisms for selecting candidates have often been marred by issues such as imposition of candidates, lack of open primaries, and exclusion of certain groups, which may affect the democratic nature of elections and public trust in the political system (Sani & Usman, 2024).
